In the last several months I have been in talks with some musicians and getting things planned out and now I can finally talk about it in some detail. I have created a performing concert band. Anyone unfamiliar with the term should know that this is not a rock band with guitars, drums, and vocals, but it's a symphonic band will woodwinds, brass, and percussion. I'm negotiating rehearsal space this week, we're putting up our recruitment posters next Monday, officially opening bank accounts on Friday, and our website will be up within 1-2 days. I'm really excited about it because over the next few years, I'm going to aggressively search for funding sources and donations and push as hard as I can to get a large enough budget to pay everyone a good working wage.
Some of the programs we're planning for the upcoming seasons:
1) Standard concerts
2) middle school and high school contest showcases (students get 2/3 off admission, teachers get 1/3 off admission. The band performs 14-16 middle school level pieces chosen through popular vote by band directors. The band will perform 5-7 high school level pieces selected by popular choice. These will be two separate concerts.)
3) Affordable band camps (Many students can't afford summer band camps because it costs near $1000 per student, we're developing a way to do it for $250)
4) Patron sponsoring of school trips (a patron can bring a band program to the concert by buying tickets at a significantly reduced price, the school is only responsible for transportation costs)
I feel rather good about myself, I'm doing something that's going to create about 50 new jobs for performers (more in the future for administrators and such) and I'm working to give disadvantaged kids a chance to see high quality performances for free.
If you feel like supporting us, our website is here: houstonwindsymphony.org and we will have a donation page up with a little button for it as soon as we can. Also, within a month or two we will be starting an indegogo fundraising project so keep an eye out for it!
