So as mentioned in my last update I was looking into creating a wind symphony. Lucky for me, there's been quite a bit of support! I have about 30 musicians who want to join (still need a dozen or so more) and I've found donors!

The cool bit is that if I calculate JUST the donations that have been guaranteed and add in the projected revenue from ticket sales, then we will beat our budget by $2,500! That's an extra 2.5k we can use to pay for all rehearsals for next year, it will lighten our load and give me the opportunity to really start investing in some good equipment.

If you are interested in supporting the Houston Wind Symphony, we are currently working out a fiscal sponsorship contract with Fractured Atlas (an awesome nonprofit that helps out other non profits) so that all donations are tax deductible. If you don't care about tax deductions and just want to help, then visit houstonwindsymphony.org and click on the support page. Everything counts, $5, $10, $15, it's all needed!

In the last several months I have been in talks with some musicians and getting things planned out and now I can finally talk about  it in some detail. I have created a performing concert band. Anyone unfamiliar with the term should know that this is not a rock band with guitars, drums, and vocals, but it's a symphonic band will woodwinds, brass, and percussion. I'm negotiating rehearsal space this week, we're putting up our recruitment posters next Monday, officially opening bank accounts on Friday, and our website will be up within 1-2 days. I'm really excited about it because over the next few years, I'm going to aggressively search for funding sources and donations and push as hard as I can to get a large enough budget to pay everyone a good working wage.

Some of the programs we're planning for the upcoming seasons:

1) Standard concerts

2) middle school and high school contest showcases (students get 2/3 off admission, teachers get 1/3 off admission. The band performs 14-16 middle school level pieces chosen through popular vote by band directors. The band will perform 5-7 high school level pieces selected by popular choice. These will be two separate concerts.)

3) Affordable band camps (Many students can't afford summer band camps because it costs near $1000 per student, we're developing a way to do it for $250)

4) Patron sponsoring of school trips (a patron can bring a band program to the concert by buying tickets at a significantly reduced price, the school is only responsible for transportation costs)

I feel rather good about myself, I'm doing something that's going to create about 50 new jobs for performers (more in the future for administrators and such) and I'm working to give disadvantaged kids a chance to see high quality performances for free.

If you feel like supporting us, our website is here: houstonwindsymphony.org and we will have a donation page up with a little button for it as soon as we can. Also, within a month or two we will be starting an indegogo fundraising project so keep an eye out for it!

Ok, over the summer months I have been busy and now I am ready to unveil my grand schemes. I have applied to grad school and have been accepted. I am currently working on my MA (Master of Arts) in Arts Leadership. It is a degree for anyone in fine arts who wants to run an arts organization (a museum, music thater, orchestra, etc.) it covers the nitty gritty mechanical parts to how business works and other things like getting grants and donations. I am also preparing for talks with the music school at my college to get accepted into a second master program, this one for conducting. If all goes as planned, I will be graduating with a double master, an uncommon thing on its own. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Not only am I doing this, but I am also organizing a group of musicians together to to create a professional concert band. There are currently only two of note right now, the Dallas Wind Symphony, and the Tokyo-Koesai Wind Orchestra. They are dead pro. Just like the Metropolitian Opera in New York. I am trying to bring that level of band to Houston, the largest arts hub in the southern US.

So, if you want to support the Houston Wind Symphony, message me for volunteer opportunities, how to donate, and all the other wonderful info that goes with it!

I will be VERY busy for the next 3 years or so, if you need me to do anything music related, let me know far, far, far in advance.

ok, so I fancy my self a fairly well rounded individual, a man of many interests and an unusual mix of skills. I figured, what better way to talk about issues that I believe are important, than to make a blog! I'm building a blog site with articles and the occasional video (videos will come as soon as I can build myself a small filming set that looks more respectable). As I'm getting the hang of writing these articles, I'm updating more regularly and I hope to move up to releasing 2-3 new posts a week filled with ALL SORTS of interesting info.

"This Is What I Feel Like Talking About" is a blog about issues that need more attention, or things that no one wants to say but needs to be said anyways, and no, I'm not talking about off the wall conspiracies, I mean real issues like education, politics, science, social climate, etc. So, come on by and read up on my topic of the day/week! Message me for article suggestions, questions, or comments!

Like it, favorite it, book mark it, share it, +1 it and MOST IMPORTANTLY comment on it!

Update time!

1 min read
So, in a conversation with the principal of a school I want to work at, he told me the position I want is opening up for next school year. I'm calling in all my favors from all the people who have the pull to make it happen. I'm going to pursue this as hard as I can because it would mean I would become the head of a music program at the age of 26, a VERY uncommon thing. Fingers crossed for a successful application/interview!
